XOM dropped 3.2 percent today, and the story is messier than a crude price move. Two things hit at once: RBC flagged that Exxon's Middle East exposure is a real earnings headwind, and separately, reports surfaced that Exxon is exploring a return to Venezuelan oil fields — the same ones Hugo Chavez nationalized in 2007. That Venezuela angle isn't upside, it's a liability. The country has seized foreign oil assets twice in two decades, so any re-entry is less an investment thesis and more a geopolitical wager. RBC says refining margins could offset the Middle East drag — integrated majors like Exxon profit on both the production and the processing side of oil — but the market clearly wasn't in a charitable mood today.
