GS
GS dropped nearly 4 percent today after CEO David Solomon warned, at an investor conference, that fixed-income trading is running softer than recent quarters and that expenses are climbing higher across the firm. Short version: lower revenue, higher costs. Fixed-income is Goldman's largest single revenue engine, so a mid-quarter CEO comment at a public conference is effectively a pre-announcement — and pre-announcements move stocks. The firm has nearly doubled its annual revenue to around 70 billion dollars since 2019, so this is a big machine, but big machines still get dented by a bad quarter. Today's selloff is the market marking its Q3 expectations down before the report lands. Watch the actual Q3 earnings release for whether those expense numbers are as sticky as Solomon implied.
