COP gave back 3.3 percent today — no earnings, no analyst downgrade, no headline on the wire. This is crude oil moving and dragging the name down with it. ConocoPhillips is one of the purer oil price proxies in large-cap energy — it spun off its refining and chemicals business as Phillips 66 back in 2012, so what remains is almost entirely upstream: find the oil, produce the oil, sell the oil. When crude slides, COP slides, usually without much lag. That's not a flaw in the business; that's the design. Nothing company-specific changed today. Watch where West Texas Intermediate settles later this week. Crude finds a floor, COP follows it back up. Crude stays heavy, and the energy sector starts looking like a real problem heading into Q4.
