GS profits +39%, C falls 5.6% on trading revenue decline, AMAT -6.7%

VIX closed Monday at 15.2 — a muted volatility reading heading into the first heavy day of Q3 bank earnings. That calm did not hold.
Goldman Sachs and Citigroup: opposite reactions
$GS reported Q3 profit up 39%, beating consensus by roughly 30% on strength in both investment banking and trading. The stock barely moved — the market had already priced the beat. Goldman's research desk separately flagged that it expects Wednesday's CPI to show September consumer inflation worsened.
$C beat EPS estimates and still fell 5.6%. Revenue and net income both shrank quarter over quarter. The deeper issue: the trading division posted a 13% revenue decline in Q3 and management guided to another 20% contraction ahead. An EPS beat built on cost discipline does not overcome a structurally shrinking trading book.
Johnson & Johnson: guidance raised, not enough
Building on our July Q2 earnings coverage — $JNJ fell 5.7% after Q3 revenue rose 5.9% and the company raised its full-year profit outlook. The raised guidance still came in below Wall Street's expectations, and that gap was sufficient. The medtech division is the soft spot: surgery revenues fell and the company is exploring a spinoff to address the underperformance. The stock is priced for faster growth than 7% delivers; missed high-end guidance gets penalized.
Semiconductor pressure
$AMAT was the session's largest single-name loss at 6.7%. No clean catalyst cleared the desk; the move is noted and causation is not established here. Adjacent pressure was visible: $SPCX fell 4.2% after Chinese firm CXMT announced cheaper AI memory chips over the weekend, repricing premium-chip exposure. Whether that pressure drove AMAT's decline is possible but unconfirmed by available evidence.
Other movers
$ORCL gained 4.2% as AI cloud infrastructure demand continued to underpin its Project Jupiter expansion. Energy supply is now the binding constraint on capacity — not demand — and Oracle is pressing federal regulators to approve a New Mexico gas pipeline to power the facility.
$PSX added 4.0%. Workers at the Bayway Refinery authorized a strike as contract talks stalled. The market is pricing in either a resolution or a leadership-driven margin improvement thesis ahead of October 28 earnings; the stock is up roughly 115% in 2026 year-to-date.
$CAT fell 3.3%. At approximately 29x earnings, the stock prices in sustained data-center power equipment demand. Management has warned those orders could slow after 2028, and that forward uncertainty is sufficient to compress the multiple on a cyclical at that valuation.
$UNH raised its full-year profit forecast on Q3 results; the detailed earnings breakdown ran in our July Q2 issue.
What we set aside
One proxy/governance filing and one equity-plan filing were reviewed and withheld — board mechanics and non-market-moving corporate housekeeping. Six event-driven disclosures arrived today with underlying events more than 36 hours old. $CEG, $EQIX, $FCX, and $WMB were examined and produced nothing substantive in the window.
Filings desk
No insider transactions or material corporate events cleared the substantive filings gate today.
The desk is watching Wednesday's CPI release; Goldman Sachs has already flagged that September inflation likely worsened.
