ABBV cuts 2026 guidance on $216M charge; VST +3.5% on $4B federal loan

Eight items cleared Monday's substance gate across four sectors, led by AbbVie's earnings guidance revision.

AbbVie cuts 2026 guidance on $216M acquisition charge

$ABBV filed an 8-K Monday disclosing a $216 million in-process research and development charge, the cost of acquiring drug candidates still in development. The charge trims adjusted EPS by $0.11 for both Q3 and full-year 2026, forcing a downward revision to the company's earnings guidance. AbbVie noted it cannot reliably forecast additional charges of this kind. IPR&D write-downs are non-recurring by nature, but the guidance cut is real and immediate.

Nuclear names: $4B in federal loans and an analyst upgrade

$VST gained 3.5%. Since Vistra raised $1.5 billion in bonds maturing in 2057 (covered September 24), Monday brought a separate and more direct form of government support: the Trump administration announced $4 billion in loans for Vistra's nuclear plants to power AI data centers. Vistra also updated its credit agreement with Citibank and other lenders Monday, a transaction filed separately as a material corporate event. $CEG added 3.9% on an independent catalyst — an analyst upgrade to Buy following a 3.8% increase in earnings forecasts. Constellation's nuclear fleet sits in the same AI-infrastructure demand environment as Vistra's, though Monday's federal loan announcement was specific to Vistra.

SPCX +7.6% on Morgan Stanley valuation call and TSMC talks

The $SPCX ETF, which tracks private SpaceX exposure, rose 7.6%. Morgan Stanley published a bullish case for SpaceX at roughly $160 per share, arguing markets undervalue its AI compute revenue — the firm cited more than $1.5 billion per month per client — and a planned chip factory. SpaceX was also reported to be in early conversations with TSMC. The company separately scrubbed a Satellite Direct-to-Device mission Monday and rescheduled for Tuesday.

Thermo Fisher up, Merck down, in life sciences

$TMO rose 3.4%. Thermo Fisher's proteomics platform was cited in research identifying more than 2,500 new gene-protein associations; the custom recombinant proteins market is projected to double to $10 billion by 2030. No single earnings or guidance catalyst drove Monday's move, but the supporting context is favorable. $MRK fell 3.3% on direct competitive pressure: Vaxcyte reported positive trial data for a pneumococcal vaccine positioned to capture market share in a segment currently dominated by Merck and Pfizer. Vaxcyte gained 27% on the same news.

Filings desk

Marc Andreessen sold $3.9 million in $COIN shares Monday. Coinbase's CFO sold $8 million under a pre-planned program 11 days ago; no form detail confirmed whether today's Andreessen sale was similarly scheduled.

What we set aside

Two filings were held for being more than 36 hours old. Four tickers — EQIX, PM, WELL, WMB — produced no substantive news within the window.

The desk is watching Tuesday's SpaceX SDA mission reattempt and any Q3 pricing language from AbbVie as the quarter closes.
