AAPL +4.0% on cooler CPI print, INTC -4.4% on BofA crowding note

Wednesday's inflation undershoot lifted megacap technology 3-4% while Intel fell 4.4% and AMD dropped 3.5% on semiconductor crowding concerns.

Wednesday's tape split on a single data point: cooler-than-expected inflation sent megacap technology up 3-4%, while the semiconductor complex sold off, led by $INTC down 4.4% and $AMD down 3.5%. The divergence was clean and it held all session.

The macro backdrop

The 10-Year Treasury yield stood at 4.58% heading into Wednesday — elevated but not accelerating. The VIX registered 16.5, a reading that reflects neither stress nor euphoria. WTI crude settled at $79.20 as of Monday's close, holding a range that has kept energy out of the main rotation. Wednesday's inflation print supplied the directional impulse the session needed; without it, the tape had no obvious driver.

JNJ delivers

$JNJ was the day's clearest earnings story. Johnson & Johnson reported Q2 sales growth of 5.6%, raised its full-year earnings guidance, and showed the Spravato franchise — its esketamine depression treatment — growing 25% in the quarter. That growth rate matters beyond J&J itself: Spravato is the most concrete commercial proof point so far in psychedelic-adjacent medicine, and the quarter's numbers give the space a reference data point it has been missing.

The megacap bid

The inflation catalyst sorted the large-caps with unusual clarity. $AAPL led with a 4.0% gain. $GOOGL added 3.2%, $META 3.1%, $AMZN 3.0% — tight enough in magnitude to read as sector rotation rather than stock-specific catalysts. $ORCL added 3.6% on a separate development: Oracle is reported to be the frontrunner for a major Japanese government classified cloud contract. $COIN gained 3.5% as Bitcoin reclaimed $65,000 for the first time in several weeks, recovering a threshold that defined the prior leg lower.

The other side of the tape

$INTC fell 4.4% despite separate confirmation that Intel has begun running ASML's most advanced EUV chipmaking machine in actual production — a genuine process milestone that found no buyers Wednesday. $AMD dropped 3.5%. A Bank of America fund manager survey characterizing long semiconductors as "the most crowded trade ever" circulated widely during the session; it coincided with the selling, though the crowding condition it described was not new.

Filings desk

Broadcom's Chief Legal Officer sold approximately $10 million in $AVGO stock. No material corporate event was attached to the transaction.

What we set aside

Two filings were held back because the underlying events occurred more than 36 hours before disclosure — a freshness gate, not a materiality call. $BRK-B was examined and produced no filings or substantive news within the review window.

The desk is watching Taiwan Semiconductor and GE Aerospace, both scheduled to report before Thursday's open.
