$TSLA -7.5% on Q2 earnings as Dow records and chips retreat

Tesla's quarterly results drove the session's steepest single-stock loss while the Dow added 590 points to a fresh record.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 590 points at a new record Thursday. The session beneath that headline was something else entirely.

Tesla absorbs the earnings print

$TSLA fell 7.5% after filing its Q2 earnings press release Thursday morning. The results, disclosed via 8-K, failed to hold the valuation that had built through the delivery season. Rivian added ground the same session after raising its 2026 delivery guidance on stronger-than-expected Q2 volume from the new R2 SUV — a direct inversion that defined the day's auto narrative.

Chips and AI under pressure

The semiconductor sector absorbed the day's most concentrated selling. $AMAT dropped 7.4%, $INTC fell 5.3%, and $AMD shed 4.3%. Intel had risen roughly 270% in the first half of 2026 on the thesis that its manufacturing business was recovering; Thursday's decline showed how little the valuation tolerates ahead of the July 23 earnings report. $META lost 4.9% after Mark Zuckerberg said publicly that AI agent development is running behind internal expectations — a notable admission against a backdrop of $145 billion in committed AI spending.

Where bids landed

$AAPL rose 4.8% as capital rotated away from chip and AI-adjacent exposure. $NFLX gained 4.7% after the company walked away from a potential Warner Bros. acquisition, allowing investors to refocus on subscriber engagement and monetization fundamentals. $ADBE added 4.1% following an HSBC upgrade that argued the AI-competition discount applied to the stock was excessive. $DIS gained 4.0%. $COIN rose 3.9%, helped by a June jobs report that came in at 57,000 payrolls against a 114,000 consensus — a miss that moved Fed rate-cut expectations forward and lifted crypto-adjacent equities.

Macro backdrop

The 10-Year Treasury yield sat at 4.48% as of July 1. The 30-Year Mortgage Rate printed at 6.43% Thursday. The VIX closed at 16.6 — implying that the day's dispersion across individual names did not register as systemic fear.

Filings desk

$XOM completed a corporate restructuring in which ExxonMobil's operating company became a subsidiary of a new parent holding company, ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation. Trading halted July 1 and resumed under the same ticker Thursday; twelve board members resigned and three new directors were elected. $NVDA disclosed that Ajay Puri, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations for 21 years, will retire once his replacement is in place. Nicholas Parker joins from Microsoft on August 24 with a $1 million base salary, a $5 million sign-on bonus, and $40 million in stock. Alphabet President sold $3.1 million in $GOOG shares on June 29.

What we set aside

One proxy filing was reviewed and excluded — board mechanics without a market catalyst. Two disclosures involving events older than 36 hours were held from the lead. BRK-B was examined and produced no filings or substantive news in the window.

The desk is watching Tesla's earnings conference call and the July 23 Intel report as the first hard test of the semiconductor sector's first-half valuation reset.
