QCOM down 7.6% on BofA warning, LLY up 7.1% on BioArctic deal

A clean directional split: semiconductor names fell on competition warnings while pharma and software platforms gained; the 10-year Treasury held at 4.40%.

Thursday's rate data provided the week's macro frame: the 10-year Treasury settled at 4.40%, and the 30-year mortgage rate printed 6.49%, sustaining pressure on housing affordability without triggering broader risk repricing. VIX closed at 18.9. Against that backdrop, Friday's session delivered a clean directional split — chip equipment down, software and pharma up — with no ambiguity about which way the rotation was running.

Semiconductors under pressure

$QCOM fell 7.6%, putting the stock 14.6% below its recent high. The catalyst was structurally contradictory: Bank of America raised its price target to $195 while simultaneously flagging intense competition in the AI chip market. Qualcomm's stated medium-term goal — growing non-smartphone revenue to $40 billion by 2029 via data centers and AI — remains the company's operating thesis, but the session priced the competition warning, not the ambition. $AMAT fell 6.2% without a single clean headline catalyst; the stock tracked broader semiconductor equipment pressure.

Software and defense platforms

$MSFT gained 5.7%. Reports this week placed the OpenAI IPO timeline at 2027 rather than late 2026, citing pursuit of a $1 trillion valuation; the delay reduces a near-term overhang for Microsoft's associated stake. $CRM added 5.4%; analyst commentary this week converged on the view that AI disruption risk to Salesforce's core business is overstated relative to the company's sustained above-market operating margins. $PLTR rose 5.3% after being formally selected as the data architecture provider for the U.S. Army's NGC2 command program — a specific, revenue-relevant defense contract win, even as European government business has lagged. $ADBE gained 4.8% following the acquisition of Topaz Labs, which adds AI image-enhancement tooling to Creative Cloud and expands Adobe's positioning in enterprise marketing and design workflows.

Pharma and other movers

$LLY posted Friday's largest gain at 7.1%, supported by two distinct catalysts: a $30 million upfront collaboration with BioArctic on a neurodegeneration drug (with up to $770 million in additional milestones), and EMA backing for Jaypirca in chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Leerink raised its price target to $1,232. $COIN gained 4.6% after CEO Brian Armstrong disclosed the company has halved its AI infrastructure costs as token usage scales. $NFLX added 4.1% and $JNJ gained 4.0% without identifiable single catalysts; both moves appear rotation-driven into large-cap defensive and platform names.

Filings desk

$AVGO director Henry Samueli sold $249.9 million in company stock — the single largest insider transaction on the desk this week. At $ORCL, the Vice Chairman exercised options and sold $47.3 million in shares. Neither transaction carries an accompanying operational disclosure.

What we set aside

Three filings were withheld because the underlying events were more than 36 hours old at disclosure. $BRK-B was examined and produced no substantive filings or news within the window.

The desk is watching weekend analyst commentary on $QCOM's competitive position in AI chips and any follow-on context on the Samueli sale at $AVGO.
